Saladin (1137-1193), Sultan of Egypt and Syria. Saladin led Islamic opposition to the European armies during the Crusades. He recaptured Palestine and Jerusalem from the Crusaders, but his chivalrous conduct in battle earned him praise and respect from his foes. This woodcut portrait is from the 1575 Basle edition of Elogia virorum bellica virtute illustrium (Praise of Men Illustrious for Courage in War) by the Italian historian and biographer Paolo Giovio (1483-1552).
