Saladin (1137-1193), Sultan of Egypt and Syria. Saladin led Islamic opposition to the European armies during the Crusades. He recaptured Palestine and Jerusalem from the Crusaders, but his chivalrous conduct in battle earned him praise and respect from his foes.
