The statue of Nymph Erkyna in the river with the same name. Krya Springs, Livadia town, Central Greece

This statue of a maiden holding a goose in her hands, is a statue of Erkyna, the Nymph . You can see in it the river that has taken her name, in a beautiful place called Krya Springs in the heart of Livadia . According to Greek Mythology, Erkyna was a friend of Persephone (who later become "Queen of the Underworld) ,the daughter of Demetra (goddess of agriculture, grain and fertility). One day, the two young women were playing in a beautiful gorge, with a goose. The goose left from the hands of Erkyna, and hid in a cave, behind a rock. When Erkyna or Persephone (there are different versions) moved the rock, water came flowing out, creating the springs and the river. Two of the springs, the spring of Forgetfulness and the spring of Remembrance (Πηγές της Λήθης και της Μνημοσύνης= Piges tis Lithis kai tis Mnimosinis), were used in the ancient years for the preparation of the people visiting the famous and rather peculiar Oracle of Trofonios Zeus Erkyna river is one of the two "feminine" rivers in Greece, the other one is Neda river in Peloponnese. All the other rivers in Creek and in Greece, are masculine, just like sky (ουρανός=ouranos) or wind (άνεμος=anemos) are, while the lakes are feminine, just as Earth (Γή, Γαία= Gaia) is. It must have something to do with movement, with the vehemence of the masculine, and the stability and fertility of the feminine on the other hand, I think.
