Gothic wooden church and stone rosary prayer garden, Dębno Podhalańskie, Poland. Blue-toned or cyanotype monochrome version of original photograph.

Dębno Podhalańskie, Nowy Targ, Lesser Poland, Poland: a stone rosary prayer garden lies beside the Gothic wooden church of St Michael the Archangel, built in the late 1400s of larch logs and fir timbers secured by wooden dowels and without the use of nails. The steep roof and outside walls are shingled. The tower, topped by a pyramidal cupola and with an overhanging storey creating a bell chamber, was added in 1601. The church was awarded World Heritage site status in 2003 as one of the UNESCO Wooden Churches of Southern Lesser Poland. The word rosary comes from the Latin word rosarium, meaning rose garden. In the mid-1500s, rosaire came to mean a garden of prayers. When creating a Rosary prayer garden in a public space, one established custom is a prominent statue of the Virgin Mary in the centre.
