Hyperaccumulator plant research. Samples extracted from hyperaccumulator plants being analysed for concentrations of zinc and cadmium. Hyperaccumulator plants are capable of growing in soils with very high concentrations of metals, which they absorb through their roots and concentrate in extremely high levels in their tissues. They are being investigated for their potential to extract heavy metals from contaminated land, to see if they can help return the soil to a less toxic state. Photographed at the University of Maryland, USA.
