Anti-seasickness boat. Cross section of a ship meant to prevent seasickness, designed by Henry Bessemer in 1868-69. The design had a domed pass- engers' saloon which was pivoted on a frame shaped like an 'A'. A large weight hung from beneath the saloon. The weight and pivot prevented seasickness by keeping the saloon vertical as the ship rolled. Bessemer had made his fortune by inventing a steel manufacturing method. A chronic seasickness suff- erer, he lost much of his fortune trying to find a remedy. Seasickness is a type of motion sickness and is the result of confusion in the brain because of conflicting information from the senses about whether the person is moving or not.
