Yu the Great, c. 2200 – 2100 BC. Legendary ruler in ancient China famed for his introduction of flood control, he is said to have drained the Chinese empire from the effects of a mighty deluge by using tortoise shells as drain pipes. He also made a system of irrigation canals which relieved floodwater into fields, as well as spending great effort dredging the riverbeds.
