This brilliant and universally admired spring flower will thrive in any soil or situation, but to be brought to the highest perfec- tion it should be grown in an open bed or border of deep, rich sandy loam. When planted in large groups or lines of distinct colors, the effect is very striking. They are invaluable for pot culture. To secure a succession of blooms commence planting early in October, 6 or 8 bulbs in a pot (the named varieties are best for this purpose), using rich soil and planting about half an inch deep. Place the pots on a surface of ashes, cover the top one inch deep with soil, until the leaves appear, when they may be removed to. the house.
