Cri du chat syndrome chromosomes. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) micrograph (right) of the chromosome 5 pair of a person with cri du chat syndrome. This is a chromosomal abnormality caused by the deletion of a gene. The gene is marked green on the chromosome at centre right. It is not present on the one to its right. The chromosomes at left frame are viewed under a normal light mic- roscope. This is to highlight the benefits of the FISH technique in diagnosing genetic disorders. Cri du chat syndrome makes the infant's cry high and feline, giving the condition its name. It also causes mental retardation. Magnification unknown.
