The Keeler's Stone (Ballaun Stone), Kilmalkedar, Co. Kerry: a natural outcrop with 3 large holes & 4 shallower depressions (ballauns) used for cursing
The Keeler's Stone (Ballaun Stone), Kilmalkedar, Co. Kerry: a natural outcrop with 3 large holes & 4 shallower depressions (ballauns) in its upper surface in which oval or rounded stones were turned to invoke a curse. If the curse was unjust it would rebound on the person who invoked it. Probably prehistoric in origin, but often found in Ireland in conjunction with Early Christian monuments. May have been made/used as a mortar &/or as a quern to grind grain. The site is a protected National Monument in State Care.
