Trachyte. Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of trachyte, an igneous rock. This sample is classed as \Quartz-trachyte\". One of the essential components of trachyte is plagioclase feldspar, seen here as large lath-shaped crystals. Olivine is also visible as the large irregularly shaped crystals, with randomly oriented fractures. Both the feldspar and olivine are embedded in a fine fragmented matrix (typically of sanidine and albite). Horizontal object size of this section: mm"
