Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK. 29th November 2019. Salisbury Cathedral’s spectacular Advent Procession “From Darkness to Light” attracts hundreds of worshippers and spectators alike. As the title suggests, the Cathedral begins in complete silence and darkness. Then the Advent Candle is lit and a single voice sings in the darkness of “the power of God” coming to earth. The service marks the beginning of Advent, the period when Christians prepare for the Lord’s coming. Within the atmospheric surroundings of the Wiltshire Cathedral, via readings, movement and song, the story is conveyed of patriarchs and prophets who all anticipated the adventus or “arrival” of the Light. By the end the service the whole interior of the medieval building is alight with 1400 flickering candles, with a spotlight streaming through the gorgeous Prisoners of Conscience window at the East end. All the Cathedral’s clergy and the Bishops take part in the procession as do all the Cathedral’s musicians and many former choristers and other volunteers. The Procession attracts nearly two thousand worshippers on all three evenings the event takes place. The image capturing the movement of the candle lit procession was created using a digital SLR camera set to a slow shutter speed.
