Back muscles. Computer artwork showing selected muscles of the back and neck. The innermost muscles either side of the spine are the longissimus muscles. Outermost are the iliocostalis muscles. These muscles maintain good posture and stabilise the torso. The longissimus capitis muscle is seen in the neck. It attaches to the upper thoracic vertebrae and the mastoid process of the skull. It helps to keep the head erect as well as with backwards and side-to-side movements.
