In measuring flat machines, the measurement should be taken from centre tocentre of the outside needles; count the needles and divide by the number ofinches, tlius giving the number of needles to the inch. In this method, however,it would be wrong to count both outside needles, as the extreme at one endwould be the beginning of another measurement. The most practical way ofcounting would be to place your rule against the inside of one needle and countthe other extreme in the measurement, thus making the number of needles andthe number of spaces even, and obtaining the correct number within the measure-ment.
