Prince James Francis Edward Stuart (1688-1765), The Old Pretender. Prince James Francis Edward Stuart dressed in Garter robes and with the Crown on the table beside him as the heir apparent to the throne which his father. James II (1633-1701), had been forced to abdicate in 1688. Through the window we see the gardens of St Germain-en-Laye, the chateau supplied to the exiled Stuarts by Louis XIV (1638-1715). After a miniature c1695 attributed to a follower of Jacques-Antoine Arlaud (1668-1746). Original housed in the Royal Collection. From 'The Connoisseur', 1925.
