Cross springs from golden ball surmounting the lead-sheathed dome of the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta on the Campo dei Miracoli at Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, The dome is now thought to have been built 1090 - 1100, not long after the cathedral’s foundation in 1064.

Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta (Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption), Pisa, Tuscany, Italy: cross and golden ball on elliptical dome, designed by Busketo and decorated around 1380 by Piccio di Landuccio. It was inspired by the great Byzantine domes, primarily that of Santa Sofia (Turkey). Pisa cathedral was founded in 1064 and consecrated in 1118. It was built in Pisan Romanesque style in two stages, one by architect Busketo (or Buscheto), who created the original layout, and one by Rainaldo, who extended the building and the façade. The building was not finally completed until the late 1300s, with Gothic additions.
