An old engraving of a Victorian three-wheel ‘road roller’ made by Aveling and Porter of Rochester, Kent, England, UK. It is from a mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. A road roller (roller-compactor or roller) is used to compact soil, gravel, concrete, or asphalt in the construction of roads and foundations. Similar machines are used also at landfills or in agriculture. Road rollers are frequently referred to as steamrollers, regardless of their method of propulsion. Aveling and Porter was a British agricultural engine and steamroller (road roller) manufacturer. Thomas Aveling and Richard Thomas Porter entered into partnership in 1862, and developed a steam engine three years later. It was tested in Chatham, Rochester and in Hyde Park, London. The machine proved a huge success. Aveling and Porter steam rollers were exported to Europe and as far afield as India and North America. By the early 1900s, the company had become the largest manufacturer of road rollers in the world.
