'Charles IX. Roi de France', King Charles IX of France, (c1820s). Charles IX (1550-1574) was a member of the Valois Dynasty. He ruled France from 1560 until his death. He was king at the time of the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre (1572), but historians are divided over his responsibility for it.
