The building was notfinished until some months afterward. By his will he left an endowment to theinstitution of $400,000, but the courts decided after long litigation that partsof the will were invalid. Only about $45,000 was received, and that in bondsand mortgages. On March 16, 1872, years after the name ChamberlainInstitute was adopted, the boarding hall, including the library, cabinet, furni-ture, etc., was burned, but was rebuilt within twelve months, the buildingcommittee being E. S. Ingersoll, Stephen Burlingame, William M. Brown,Frank Hovey, and J. H. Chaffee. The institution now has an aggregatewealth of $113,
