Of those prominent in the Republican party at thetime of its organization in the county were Ben Field,Noah Davis, Jr., Alamanzor Hutchinson, Gideon Hard,Danly D. Sprague and Silas M. Burroughs. Some yearslater, beginning in the early 60s, Ben Field, of Albion,became not only prominent in local politics but in Stateand National as well, and was undoubtedly one of themost masterful and adroit politicians in the State. Hewas State senator but a single term, yet his activities inparty councils were always great. From the Cleveland administration to that of Gov-ernor Hughes may best be treated as the earlier and thelater period.
