Gangrene. View of blackened necrosing (dying) skin on the foot due to gangrene. Gangrene is the death and decay of part of the body due to poor blood supply. This is caused by injury, disease, frostbite, severe burns, diabetes, atherosclerosis and embolism. Here, the blood was stopped to the affected area by a plaster cast being set too tightly. Treatment includes restoring the blood supply to the area and giving antibiotic drugs to ensure that the tissue does not become infected. In more severe cases, amputation is required.
