The Tablelands in the south west of Gros Morne National Park are like a barren desert due to the peridotite rock that is thought to originate in the Earth's mantle. The yellow-brown color is due to the high amount of iron. Peridotite has a dark green color. It also lacks some of the usual nutrients required to sustain most plant life and has a toxic quality. Almost nothing grows in the tablelands.
