BARTON, Peter, Bishop of Kays-ville, Davis county, Utah, is the son ofJohn Barton and Elizabeth Bell, andwas born March 21, 1845, at St. Helens, 464 LATTER-DAY SAINT Lanchashire England. He was bap-tized by Elder James Barton in 1855;ordained a Deacon and later a Priestwhile in England. He emigrated toUtah in 1862, crossing the Atlantic inthe ship Manchester, and traveledover the plains in Ansel P. Harmonsox-train. After his arrival in Utah, hesettled in Kaysville, where he has re-sided ever since. He was ordained anElder and subsequently a Seventy, andin 1874-76 he labored as a missionary in. Great Britain. June 18, 1877, he wasordained a High Priest and Bishop andset apart to preside over the KaysvilleWard, which position he still occupieswith honor, both to himself and theWard. He also served as Ward clerkin Kaysville for a number of years. InFebruary, 1889, he was sentenced to fif-teen months imprisonment for un-lawful cohabitation, but before havingserved his full term, he was pardoned,being the first Mormon ever pardonedby Pres. Benjamin Harrison. BishopBarton has held a number of civil po-sitions, such as justice of the peace,cityrecorder of Kaysville, etc. He ha? alsoserved two terms in the Utah legisla-ture. BARNKS, John Kicliard, coun-selor to Bishop Peter Barton of Kays-ville, was born at Sandy, July 28, 1833. He was bap-tized April 28, 1848, and ordained aPriest in 1850. H
