Size medium; grayish brown or light sooty brown glossedwith silvery; upper unicuspidate teeth crowded and unequal insize; first pair of lower incisors very small, the next pair large. Length about 175 mm. ( inches); tail vertebrae 35(); hind foot 21 (.83). Type locality, San Francisco, California Mole, About two-thirds life size. Central and northern California. They ha/e not been re-ported from the San Joaquin and Sacramento Valleys and areprobably rare there. I have seen Mole runs in nearly all themountain ranges of California, up to 5,000 feet altitude andhigher. In some parts of the mountains where the soil is of gooddepth and loose the runs are numerous. Scapanus californicus anthonyi Allen. (For A. W. Anthony.) ANTHONY MOLE. Similar to californicus, smaller and darker. Brownish slateblack with silvery reflections. Length of San DiegO County specimens about 155 mm.( inches) ; tail vertebra 34 () ; hind foot 20 (.78) ; frontfoot 21 long by 16 wide (.85x63). Female smaller.
