The living Buddha is expected, and peoplegather here, coming from great distances, not only to worship, butto pay tribute to Buddha, and also for amusement. Already manyvillages of tents have sprung up. All the people are in a state ofexpectancy and excitement. For several days past the Lamas havebeen very busy carrying to the temple pails and skin-bottles of sourand sweet milk, whiskey made of mares milk, wooden plates ofChinese cakes, cheese, and various other articles. To-day we havebeen amused to see them go by with tiny bits of one thing andanother in their hands from the Chinese trading-tents, — a smallpiece of mutton, a little bunch of half-grown onions, a bowl ofbean curd, or some other choice delicacy.
