Fig. 262. — The cherry fruit-fly,R. cingulata (X 51). of June and may be found on the trees during the next twomonths. They are pretty httle flies, considerably smaller thana house-fly, and have their wings crossed by four blackishbands (Fig. 262). The body is black, with lateral borders of thorax light yellow, andthe caudal borders ofthe abdominal segmentswhitish ; the head andlegs arc yellowish-brown. These files sticktheir dirty yellow, elon-gate eggs through theskin of the ripening cher-ries, and the maggots,which doubtless hatch ina few days, revel in the juicy flesh for 3 or 4 weeks, soon forminga rotting cavity near the pit. Rarely does more than one maggotinfest the same cherry (Fig. 260). Many of the maggots arenearly fuU-growTi about picking-time and go to the consumer orcannery. Many emergefrom the fruits andchange to puparia inthe bottom of thebaskets, and may becarried in this way tonew localities. This fruit-fly may at-tack many varieties ofcherries, whether sweetor so
