The new engines are intended foruse on the Cape Government sectionof the South African Railways, andhave been constructed by the NorthBritish Locomotive Company, Ltd.,of Glasgow, to the designs of Mr. Beattie. They are amongst thelargest engines yet built for the 3-foot6-inch gauge. The cylinders have thelarge dimensions of 20l/2 inches di-ameter, with a stroke of 28 inches,and to supply them with steam aboiler of 5 feet 7^4 inches diameter. FIG. 25.
