Late evening August sunlight and shadows as the darkening Tyrrhenian Sea laps a beach still busy with holidaymakers below the spectacular clifftop town and holiday resort of Tropea, on the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) in western Calabria, southern Italy.
Tropea, Calabria, Italy: the Convento beach below this historic clifftop town is still busy with holidaymakers on a hot August evening, as shadows darkening the surface of the Tyrrhenian Sea start to creep up the sands and storm clouds begin to gather overhead. The sheer sandstone cliffs, reinforced in places by lines of concrete arches, are surmounted by high-rise houses and apartments that almost seem to grow out of the rock face. Tropea, supposedly founded by the God Hercules on what is now known as the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods) in western Calabria, has a compact historic centre filled with former palaces and wayside shines and also an old town. Both feature numerous belvederes and balconies offering spectacular panoramic views as far as the Aeolian Islands some 37 miles (60 km) to the west. The plume from Stromboli, one of Italy’s three active volcanoes, is visible on clear days. As a holiday resort, Tropea is popular with both Italians and Germans. Its reputation was greatly enhanced when it won the 2021 ‘Borgo dei Borghi’ (Village of the Villages) national contest, an annual search to find Italy’s most beautiful village.
