When the amount of capital necessaryto increase the capacity of this station, and its limiting fea-tures was compared with the cost of building rotary-con vsubstations and purchasing power, it was found that the sub-stations had a favorable balance. By locating such sub-stations at outlying points the investment for cables to carryboth alternating and direct current, which would have beennecessary with an Increi paclty in this companys gen- erating station, was not required. The present condllwarranted the building and equipping of two rotary-convertersubstations, one on the Garfield Park branch at Forty-Sixthavenue and the oilier near Robey street at the junction ofthe Humboldt Park and Logan Square branches, both substations to
