, Verdun, Meuse, France - City centre at the Meuse River. The building with a flag is Chaussee Tower built in 1380, the link between so-called small fortress walls from the 13th century and great fortress walls from the 14th century. One of the biggest and bloodiest battles of the First World War and in history took place in 1916 in Verdun. The Hell of Verdun lasted several months, cost hundreds of thousands of lives of German and French soldiers without a significant change to the front line. In 1987 Verdun was entitled as The World Centre for Peace, Freedom and Human Rights by the UN.
