Healthy brain. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan through a human head showing a healthy brain in axial (horizontal) section. The front of the brain is at top. The scan has passed through the cerebrum, which is the largest part of the brain and is responsible for conscious thought. It is divided into left and right hemispheres. The dark areas down centre, the ventricles, lie between the two hemispheres. The ventricles are spaces filled with cerebrospinal fluid, the fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. CT scans are obtained using low-intensity X-rays to produce slice images of the human body.
