Ireland; County Mayo: Croagh Patrick Pilgrimage (2009)

Each year on 'Reek Sunday, the last Sunday in July, over 25 000 Catholic pilgrims of all ages, - many barefoot-, climb Ireland's holiest mountain Croagh Patrick ("Cruach Phádraig" in Irish), locally known as "The Reek". This mountain in the west of Ireland, County Mayo, has been an important site of pilgrimage in honour of St Patrick since before the arrival of Celtic Christianity. In 441, Ireland's patron saint fasted on the summit of Croagh Patrick and built a church there. Group of pilgrims walking down the mountain. View over Clew Bay and the village of Murrisk.
