Blast furnace. This 19th-century blast furnace, exact location unknown, is thought to be in either Virginia or West Virginia, USA. Dating from the 1890s, this photograph is from the Albert T. Keller collection of the American Iron and Steel Institute. The collection consists of historical photographs of blast furnaces used in the iron and steel industry. A blast furnace is where iron ore is heated to high temperatures in the presence of oxygen, with the carbon content controlled to produce types of steel (an alloy of iron and carbon).
