SILVER. No. 2639—1855. THIS is given as an example of a style of bookbinding, or rather of thedecoration of the covers of a book, which during the last century hasgone greatly out of fashion. As a mode of ornament, however, admittingmuch variety of detail from very simple to elaborate forms, it might bere-introduced with good effect. The book-cover is probably Dutch, about the end of the seventeenthcentury, and the design consists of rich scrolls and foliage, twining andintertwisting in all directions, and enclosing birds. A space is left on theback for lettering, and the sides are hinged on to the back pieces. Acouple of hinges close the book in front. The size is about eight inches and a half by six and a half—sufficientfor a large octavo volume. Bought for 10/.
