Milky Way and one of the ALMA telescopes (lower centre), panoramic view. Zodiacal light is seen behind and at right of the antenna. At far left are two satellite dwarf galaxies, the Small Magellanic Cloud and Large Magellanic Cloud. ALMA (Atacama Large Millimetre/sub-millimetre Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas located at an elevation of 5000 metres on the arid Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. The Milky Way is our galaxy seen from the inside, forming a band of stars and nebulae stretching across the sky. Zodiacal light is sunlight reflected from dust particles orbiting in the plane of the solar system. Photographed on 14 October 2015.
