Bailey, PlinyBryan, and otherfamous Confederatespies spent sometime within its advantage gained. by the Confederatesecret agents was oftennullified through thecounter informationsecured by the Federalscouts. The photo-graphshows one of Col-onel Sharpes trustedmen, a private of theThird Indiana Cav-alry, who would oftenlead out a party ofscouts to get informa-tion as to the locationand strength of thevarious parts of theArmy of NorthernVirginia. These menwould go forward untilthey discovered theline of Confederatepickets, and then useall their trained powersof observation to findout what was behindit.
