Tesla coil experiment. Electrical streamers sparking outwards from a large Tesla coil at left to a terminal at right, at the laboratory operated by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) at Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. The photographer (Dickson Alley) is seated at left. Tesla operated this laboratory from 1899 to 1900. The coil named after him is a type of resonant transformer that is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating current electricity. Tesla's research led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. The SI unit of magnetic flux density is named in his honour.
