‘Grand Gateway and Tomb of the Emperor Acber at Secundra’ engraved by Thomas Sutherland (1785–1838). The third Mughal emperor known as Akbar the Great (1542–1605) is regarded as the greatest of the line of Mughal rulers of India. Came to the throne in 1556 and ruled the whole of Northern India with great skill, constructing a road network, a taxation system and a weights and measures system. He was a wise and tolerant ruler who encouraged the arts, literature and music. The construction of the tomb was started by Akbar in his lifetime, and was completed by his son Jahangir by 1613.
