This supposed affliction is believed by Christians to spontaneously occur, mirroring the injuries sustained by Christ during his crucifixion. A number of the more famous stigmatists from history have subsequently been uncovered as frauds, but there are still unexplained occurrences which Christians claim are supernatural but others argue may be psychosomatic.
