Fishing nets at a Uros Iruitos Indian settlement on Phuwa island a floating reed island on Lake Titicaca, Bolivia


Lake Titicaca is situated on the Bolivian and Peru border at the northern end of the Altiplano. At an altitude of 3810 metres above sea level it is the highest navigable lake in the world. The lake measures some 190 kilometre by 80 kilometres The area around the lake is the heartland of the Aymara. The Lake was also the centre of Inca religious beliefs and remains of the Incas civilisation can be seen on the Island of the Moon and Sun. The Uros Iruitos floating reed island called Phuwa is near Huatajata on the southern side of the lake. There a number of these settlements living on islands made of Tortura reeds on both the Bolivian and Peruvian sides of the lake.
