American oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) preening. Preening helps to keep its feathers in good condition. This seabird inhabits coastal regions of eastern North America, from New England to the Gulf of Mexico. It feeds on marine invertebrates, particularly bivalve molluscs, whose shells it pries open using its large bill. It can reach a length of over 50 centimetres. Photographed in Florida, USA.
