Then another air valve is opened and theaxle is raised by the center plunger and is swung around on aball-l)earing pivot and dropped into place for grinding the otherend. The machine is motor-driven, one motor supplying the powerfor all purposes. A pump is provided which delivers about50 gals, of water or lubricant on the wheel and work per lubricant is contained in a tank forming part of the baseof the machine. The drivinggear, of the lloating type, revolves on a roller bearing designedespecially for this pnrpose, which is calculated to make themachine durable for the severe service and assures that therewill be no wearing or wobbling of the driving gear under hardservice. Other parts of the machine are designed with equalcare to stand the maxinunn of misuse with a minimum oftrouble. -Ml revolving parts are of high grade steel and areheat treated where necessary. Ball bearings are liberally usedthroughout, and where worm gearing is used it runs in an oilbath, To test the \alue of tlie different methods of finishing axles,so far as the accuracy of the work was concerned, three separatepieces were completed, one being turned and polished in theusual manner, th
