Scales large, broadly ovate, with very fine numerous circuli; 33 or 34 weak apical denticles, 7 to 9 transverse series of basal elements, often as more or less distinct cusps. D. Largely dull dark brown with dusky over vertical fins and ventrals, pectorals with more brownish tinge. Iris brown. A996, A997, A1033, A1034. Buka Buka Island, Gulf of Tomini, Celebes. Novem- ber 20, 1909. Length 210 to 228 mm. Nearly black, shading to brown under scales, probably dark seal brown with slaty streaks in life, of which usually 2 to each scale row. On side of head and breast brown in form of spots in pale ground color, spots size of number 6 shot. No black shoulder blotch or black spots in axils of verticals. Fins nearly black. Dorsal with oblique bars extending upward and backward, best seen in reflected light. Oblique.
