The Wild Goose, or Grey Lag, of British authors[Alias anser).—This is but one of six wild speciesof geese that visit our islands in great Hawker thus specifies them:—The BeanGoose ; a variety of the common one : The Bemacle;most common in Ireland and Scotland (and a smaller THE WILD GOOSE, 291 bird): The Brent Goose ; still less than the former:The Grey Lag: The Egyptian Goose; Ganser, orGambo Goose: and the White-fronted, or LaughingGoose: besides the Red-breasted Siberian Goose,—a rare and very delicate species. There are alsoother varieties of this species, such as the Canadian,&c.; few, if any, of which, however, are visiters to \^\Wm. our island. The wild geese tly in Hocks, at veryregular intervals of distance; either going in a lineabreast, or in two lines, joining in an angle in themiddle; in short, with mathematical precision theyappear to select that figure which shall best stem theresistance of the air, and lessen their fatigues. Bytheir manner of flying, also, they present as small a 292 THE WILD GOOSE. mark as possible to the fowler or sportsman; andfrom the great height to which they rise, and thedistances they maintain from each other, it is diffi-cult, nay, almost impossible, to hit more than one ata time. The goose is remarkable for its fecundity,even in a wild state. The female hatches her eggswith great solicitude, and the male bird often drivesher off, to take her place with a more noisy wild goose seldom lays above eight eggs. It isknown to live to a great age. Of the small brentgoose Colonel Hawker remarks, that our late king,William the Fourth, esteemed it beyond other wildfowl. Of the
