At meetings with the Association forSupervision and Curriculum Develop-ment of the National Education Associ-ation and with groups of elementaryschool administrators, there was generalagreement that the teaching of propertelephone usage still serves a highly use-ful purpose. The educators also suggestedthat the format (film, filmstrips, bookletsand practice telephones—or Teletrainer)be retained, but that the program shouldbe aimed at the second and third gradelevels, rather than the higher grades, since most children starting school todayalready use the telephone. They felt that the approach should beinformational, primarily to acquaint stu-dents with the proper use of the tele-phone, and that the various materialsshould reinforce other subjects being. taught—such as courtesy, diction, someaspects of the science behind the tele-phone, social studies and alphabetization—and should bo stimulating to the stu-dents. It was also suggested that realpeople or animation be used in the film, rather than the puppets used in the firstprogram, to avoid the possibility that thechildren might remember the dramaticstory or the puppet characters ratherthan the lessons being taught. And it wasfelt that filmstrips were needed which re-inforced the important points of the pro-gram and which enlarged upon thecontent of the film. Finally, it wassuggested that the teachers manualsshould contain resource material and lessdetail than the previous one so thatteachers could develop their own ap-proaches based on the material supplied.
