Underwater volcanoes. Image of three underwater volcanoes, known as the Three Wise Men. The colours show the depth of the sea floor, from blue (deepest) through green, yellow and red to white (shallowest). These volcanoes are in the Rano Rahi volcano field in the South Pacific Ocean and are between 1000 and 2000 metres high. Such volcanoes are frequently created near mid-ocean spreading ridges, and form chains perpendicular to the line of the ridge. The Rano Rahi, one of the largest volcano fields in the world, is associated with seafloor spreading from the East Pacific Rise. This image was made using sonar and echo-sounding data.
