Karl Marx (1818-1883), German philosopher, economist, historian, political theorist, revolutionary and socialist. He was author of the revolutionary pamphlet 'The Communist Manifesto' in 1848, which he wrote with the German political writer Engels shortly before the revolutions of 1848. This outlined their theories of class struggle and the revolutionary role of the proletariat. In 1867 he published Das Kapital, in which he expounded his theory of the capitalist system and how it would eventually destroy itself. Influenced by Hegelian philosophy, his work on dialectical materialism formed the basis for the socialist and communist thinking that inspired revolution across Europe and formed the basis of the official doctrine of the Soviet Union. His political and social influence was immense on the 20th century.
