This forthad first been built in 1707 as a protection whenthe French under Admiral Le Feboure attackedthe City. The flag was of a blue color with awhite crescent in the dexter corner. The Britishships Cherokee and Tamar lay in Rebellion having reached the Provincial Congress,then in session at Charlestown, that the British sPort Johnson, on James Island, south side of Harbor. 13 had fired upon the town of Bristol, Rhode Island,passed a resolution directing the officer command-ing at Fort Johnson, by every military operationto oppose the passage of any British naval arma-ment that might attempt to First Flag of South Carolina Troops. A passage to the town, without the range ofthe guns of Fort Johnson, was practicable for thesmall Royal armed vessels in the harbor, via theMarsh and Hog Island channels. It was deter-mined by the Council of Safety to block thesechannels, by sinking schooners therein. To coverthis work, a coasting schooner, Defence, wasarmed with ten guns and manned by a detail fromCol. Moultries regiment. Six old schooners hadbeen purchased, two to be sunk in Marsh Channel,and four in Hog Island Channel. As soon as thehulks, which were in advance, approached theirdestination, the Tamar opened and fired six shots, 14 which all fell short. As soon as the Defencecame to anchor she replied with her two nine-pounders, which, being heavier guns, carried theirshot much farther than the Tamars had Tamar, now roused at the insult, returned thefire
