Here were located many of the popular hotels;and in the adjoining territory was the police precinctknown as the Tenderloin, to be the commander ofwhich was the ambition of many police captains, asafter one or two years of it they were assured of beingable to retire with at least a competency for their decliningyears. Besides the hotels mentioned, the Hoffman and theAlbemarle, there were the Gilsey at Twenty-ninthStreet on the east side, the Grand at Thirty-first Street,just above, now called the New Grand, the ColemanHouse on the west side between Twenty-seventh andTwenty-eighth streets, the Hotel Martinique at the north-east corner
