Fancy elephants in this age solittle disturbed as to drink in the daytime, and whata glorious sight it must have been to see thesegigantic animals walking in the open with their slowmajestic step. But now I feared they must haveheard the shots I had just fired, yet as the nativesassured me that a gun had never before been firedon these islands, I still had hopes that, not knowingwhat it was, they might not have taken alarm, andin effect hearing one trumpet at no great distancesoon after dark I felt sure that such was really thecase, and had it not been for the mosquitoes, shouldhave felt perfectly happy and contented.
