Thomas Becket aka Saint Thomas of Canterbury or Thomas à Becket (1119 - 1170) was Archbishop of Canterbury from 1162 until 1170. He took an opposing view to Henry II over the rights and privileges of the Church and was murdered by followers of the king in Canterbury Cathedral following Henry's immortal words, "Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?" (or turbulent priest). Venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion, he was canonised by Pope Alexander III shortly after his death.
